Irish Times Security Analyst and Army Officer
Tom is a retired Army Officer with experience of conflict in Ireland, the Middle East and former Yugoslavia. He is the Irish Times Security Analyst writing on International terrorism and defence. Tom is an internationally recognized expert and scholar on terrorism and combat and is a Fellow of the US think-tank, Armed Forces and Society based at Loyola University.
Tom regularly appears on television and radio to give expert analysis on fast moving terrorist incidents along with tactical and strategic assessments of conflicts worldwide. He is a regular on RTE television and radio. He also appears regularly on TV3, BBC, Sky News and US, Russian and Australian networks.
Tom is also an academic and lectures at the School of Media, Dublin Institute of Technology, - Ireland’s oldest journalism school. Tom’s academic specialties like in the areas of news journalism, public affairs and crisis management.
Tom’s Doctoral Thesis focused on women in the military and the use of force by women in international military and terrorist organizations. His PhD, published in 2000 revealed the widespread bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assault of female soldiers within the Irish Defence Forces. In this regard he is regarded as one of Ireland’s foremost Whistleblowers. In September 2007, RTE Radio broadcast a documentary on his experiences as a Whistleblower.
Tom’s media career has broadened in recent years and in 2009 he presented an RTE TV/ Doubleband Productions documentary on Jack Lynch’s secret plans to invade Northern Ireland titled ‘What If – Jack Lynch Had Invaded?’ Tom is currently reviewing the newspapers on a weekly basis for RTE1 TVs ‘The Daily Show’.
Tom is an inspirationoal speaker and combines military precision with adademic depth and a great deal of wit and humour to cover a variety of topics including terrorism, experiences of combat, military leadership, communication, crisis communication, along with experiences of whistle blowing,. Tom has also conducted in-depth research into women and violence – with particular emphasis on the use of force, violence and combat by women.
Tom is in much demand a as speaker and chairperson and has conducted numerouspublic debates and interviews with figures as diverse as Enda Kenny, controversial US Assistant Secretary of State, John Negroponte, along with Newt Gingrich – father of the US House of Representatives, Colonel Tim Collins, George Galloway MP and Joe Higgins TD.
