Until September 2018, as EVP for Sustainable Business and Communications at Unilever, Sue had overall responsibility for leading and embedding its ambitious Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) into the business and ensuring progress against its 70-plus time-bound targets. This plan sets out to decouple the company’s growth from its environmental footprint, while increasing its positive social impact and supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
One of her key’s responsibilities in this role was to ensure sustainability as a key driver of growth in the company’s top 40 brands. By the end of 2017, there had been remarkable progress, with over 25 of those brands being purpose-led and growing 50% faster than Unilever’s other brands. This translated into 70% of the company’s growth in that period.
In her last year at Unilever, Sue served as lead advisor in the development of the successor to the company’s current USLP, which expires in 2020. This work involved engaging with many of the leading authorities worldwide on the social and environmental aspects of sustainability and on the SDGs.
Sue is a founder and active Trustee of the independent not-for-profit organisation, Blueprint for Better Business, which works with CEOs and Chairmen to help stimulate change within companies to become a force for good, guided by a purpose that respects people and contributes to a better society. Sue is also a Senior Associate at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
